Two very different batteries, same job

Every inverter needs a battery to store power, and in India that almost always means one of two choices: a tubular lead-acid battery, or a newer lithium (LiFePO4) battery. Both will keep your lights and fans running in a power cut — but they get there very differently, and the right choice depends on your budget, space and how you use backup power.

Lifespan

Tubular batteries typically last around 4 to 6 years with reasonable care. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries are built for a much higher number of charge-discharge cycles and commonly last 2 to 3 times longer, which is the main reason they cost more upfront.

Weight & size

A tubular battery for a home inverter is heavy — often 25 to 55 kg depending on capacity — and needs a dedicated, ventilated spot. Lithium batteries for the same capacity weigh a fraction of that, and take up far less floor space, which matters in smaller flats.

Maintenance

Tubular batteries need periodic topping up with distilled water and benefit from proper ventilation since they can release gas while charging. Lithium batteries are sealed and maintenance-free — there's nothing to top up, and no fumes.

Charging time & efficiency

Lithium batteries generally charge faster and hold their charge longer when idle. Tubular batteries take longer to reach full charge and lose charge somewhat faster when not in use.

Which should you choose?

If your priority is the lowest upfront cost and you don't mind occasional maintenance, a good tubular battery from a trusted brand is still a solid, dependable choice for most homes. If you want a maintenance-free battery that lasts longer, weighs less, and can sit in a cupboard rather than a dedicated space, a lithium battery is worth the extra investment.
